Study Abroad/Study Away
To learn more about opportunities for study abroad and specific programs, s tudents are encouraged to meet with:
- their academic advisers,
- the foreign study advisor Manishka Kalupahana (845-758-7328),
- the Dean of International Studies, Jonathan Becker (845-758-7378), and
- advisers in the Institute for International Liberal Education (which oversees many of Bard's programs).
Many students combine programs in ways that allow them to develop a distinctive approach to their area of study, experience other cultures, do on-site research, and explore new perspectives.
There are five types of programs in which students can participate:
Bard-Sponsored Programs
Programs organized by Bard College for which Bard awards academic credit and Bard financial aid generally transfers.
- Programs for Bard and Non-Bard Students
- Programs for Bard Students
Language Intensive Programs
Programs offered over the winter or summer break designed to build on study during the academic year and help students obtain a command of a foreign language.
Bard-Approved Programs
Programs offered by other academic institutions that have been found satisfactory in the past by Bard students and faculty. These programs are subject to periodic review.
Other Study Abroad Programs
Programs that are not sponsored by or affiliated with Bard and which have not been recommended by faculty.
Independent Study
An independent study project abroad may be undertaken as part of the normal course load in a study abroad program or during the January intersession or the summer. Independent study projects must be approved by a faculty sponsor, the head of the relevant division or program, and the College's Executive Committee. Students interested in developing an independent study project should consult with their academic advisers. The possibilities for research projects abroad extend to every academic discipline and are innumerable.
