The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art
Saturday, September 27, 2008 - Sunday, February 1, 2009
The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art is the inaugural event of a long-term research project on ”the documentary”. The research project aims at investigating the heritage of documentary practices in contemporary art, in relation to the history of film, documentary photography and television as well as to video art. It also aims at situating these contemporary documentary practices within current cultural production and exploring their role within mainstream media and activism. The research project is a collaboration between CCS Bard and the artist and theoretician Hito Steyerl. The research project will run for approximately three years, having started in March 2008. The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art is on view from September 27, 2008 through February 1, 2009. Download exhibition guide [pdf] [more]

| Bernd Krauss: I am Yours
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 - Friday, December 19, 2008
I am Yours is a new project by Bernd Krauss, the fall 2008 artist-in-residence at the Center for Curatorial Studies. The centerpiece of the project is a quaint wooden shed situated on the grounds of the Center on the Bard College campus. Built by the Amish and purchased locally in nearby Germantown, this type of shed is conventionally used to store gardening tools. In the context of Krauss' residency, however, the shed will be transformed into a studio, a curatorial space, and has the potential to gain other new and unexpected functions. [more]

Curatorial Scrutiny: "Documentation" with Natascha Sadr Haghighian and Marcia Acita
Monday, October 20, 2008
CURATORIAL SCRUTINY takes a close look at the working process of a curator, identifying different components of the curatorial process. In her art works, Berlin-based artist Natascha Sadr Haghighian often problematizes the act of documenting them as art. This will be the starting point of discussion about the role of documentation in the art world. Photography, video and text are some of the most common forms of documentation. When is each form the most appropriate? What do developments in new media mean for the nature and function of more traditional forms of documentation? Marcia Acita, assistant director of the Hessel Museum, will respond. Natascha Sadr Haghighian is a Berlin-based artist. Marcia Acita is the assistant director of the museum at the Center for Curatorial Studies and Art in Contemporary Culture and the Hessel Museum of Art. View Full Schedule [more]
