The Award for Curatorial Excellence was inaugurated in 1998 to honor a curator who has made lasting contributions to the discipline. The award is made annually in May.

- 2005: Kathy Halbreich (Director of the Walker Art Center) and Mari Carmen Ramírez (Wortham Curator of Latin American Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)
- 2006: Lynne Cooke (Curator at the Dia Art Foundation) and Vasif Kortun (Director of the Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul)
