The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College invites you to a "Conversation"

Andrea Giunta: Leon Ferrari’s Retrospective: Curatorial Project and Debates

Tuesday, October 4, 2005

4:30 p.m., Avery Theater

Between December 2004 and January 2005, a major Retrospective of Leon Ferrari, including fifty years of his work (1954-2004), was exhibited at the Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires. The exhibition opened in a context of strong debates headed by catholic groups and by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. Twenty days after the opening, the exhibition was closed by a judge’s decision and re-opened fifteen days later, after a new decision by the justice. The lecture will present the curatorial project, and debates involved in the over 1000 articles that were published about an exhibition that is considered paradigmatic for the discussion on the relationships between art and democracy.

Andrea Giunta, Profesor Arte Latinoamericano moderno y contemporáneo (siglos XIX y XX), Departamento de Historia del Arte, Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires; Investigador del Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de las Argentina (CONICET); John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship 2002 / 2003.

The “Conversations” series, sponsored by the Center for Curatorial Studies, includes lectures and more informal discussions by visiting artists, curators, critics, and scholars who are invited to speak about recent work, current exhibitions, and important issues in the contemporary visual arts.
