Expanding & Destroying the Archive with video works by Peggy Ahwesh

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Please join us for a screening of video and orphan films, followed by a conversation with filmmaker and Bard faculty member, Peggy Ahwesh. Orphan films selected from the archive belonging to Ahwesh will be interspersed amongst video works that also appropriate footage from the "orphans" in her collection. The screening and conversation purposes to explore the use of orphan films in recycled cinema and its wider implications for the notion of the archive in contemporary art. The screening will begin with a video essay by Nathan Lee, "The Limits of Control", which consists of appropriated sound, image and text that tests, rehearses, and reflects upon aspects of fair use and appropriation in contemporary culture. This is a graduate student project curated and presented by Michelle Hyun as part of the course "Intellectual Property in an Open Source Culture" at the Center for Curatorial Studies.
