Speakers Series - Suhail Malik "Ape Says No"

Monday, October 24, 2011

Recent statements on art and cultural policy prepared in advance of the next Berlin Bienalle typify received dichotomies between institutionalization and the liberties supposed by contemporary art: as much as they are needed and desired, institutions have/ought to be defied if not refused. The moral claims of contemporary art are in this way as one with those of radical human rights claims. But what if institutions instead generate defiance? To be clear: not a defiance reacting against a constraining and perverting institutionalization but as its positive result. What then for contemporary art and radical human rights as its moral horizon?
