Art Spaces Archives Project [as-ap.org] is a multifaceted initiative devoted to identifying, documenting, preserving, and providing access to the archival history of alternative and avant-garde art spaces throughout the United States. AS-AP's activities and programs are designed to provide artists, curators, archivists, researchers, scholars, and students with an opportunity to engage with the centers of alternative visual arts movements and activities from the 1950's to the present.
AS-AP's website — http://www.as-ap.org — provides access to information about the history and existence of these centers of artistic activity, as well as access to unique primary resources, including transcripts of oral history interviews, and other types of documentation. AS-AP provides access to these resources to encourage the public to engage with the history of these contemporary arts organizations.
AS-AP is a non-profit initiative formed in 2003 and founded by a consortium of alternative art organizations, including Bomb Magazine, College Art Association, Franklin Furnace Archive, New York State Council on the Arts, New York State Artist Workspace Consortium, and The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Funding is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
