Margaret De Wys
Music/Sound. Composer, sound installation artist, writer. M.F.A., Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College. Collaborations with artists Kiki Smith, Joan Jonas, Dan Graham, Peter Hutton, Glenn Branca, Charlie Ahearn, Peggy Ahwesh, and Wendy Ewald. Pieces premiered with Rosalind Newman Dance Company, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, and Meridian String Quartet, among others. Her pieces have been performed in New York at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Pace Gallery, The Kitchen, Knitting Factory, Sounds from the Left Bank, and Sonic Boom Festival, as well as at Artangel's Exodus Project, Margate, U.K. Featured composer at WomenAlaska; International Seminar of the Arts, Warsaw; International Congress on Women in Music, Vienna; International Women's Day, Beijing. CD, I Oh, released in 2000; her book, Black Smoke, will be published in 2008. Maria Goeppert-Mayer Visiting Professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Braunschweig, 2004 2005. Awards include grants from Meet the Composer and commissions from Wellesley College, University of New Mexico, Temple University, and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
