Responding to the end of the Cold War, Bard developed the Program in International Education, whose mission is to promote friendship and democratic thinking among future leaders from the United States and from regions of the world that are undergoing a transition to more democratic forms of government. Originally limited to the countries of Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, and the former Yugoslavia, PIE has since expanded to include the countries of southern Africa. Since 1991 PIE has brought more than one hundred students to Bard from fifteen countries. These students study at Bard for one year, then return to their home institutions to complete their studies. While at Bard, each student participates with American students in two core seminars on aspects of democratization. Through the PIE program, which is supported by foundation grants and individual donors, gifted young people from emerging democracies are able to develop their critical thinking and gain knowledge while forming close friendships with peers from other countries. American students at Bard benefit from the chance to study and socialize with international counterparts in a context that emphasizes common issues and problems.

Through an exchange agreement, Bard students are able to study at PIE partner institution the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. The exchange allow students to learn about and experience South Africa while participating in a sound academic program. The University of the Witwatersrand offers an exciting curriculum that includes the study of the culture, languages, history, politics, literature, and arts of the region. Opportunities for independent study and travel are also available. Students participating in the PIE exchange pay Bard tuition.
