The concert features traditional and new music for the gamelan gong kebyar ensemble--a Balinese orchestra composed of gongs, metallophones, drums, cymbals, and flutes--plus an opening procession, a kecak or Balinese choral demonstration, the Margapati dance, a gender wayang interlude, and the world premiere of I Nyoman Suadin's new composition for gamelan. Popularized in the early 20th century, gamelan music is noted for its explosive dynamics, tempo changes, and intricate interlocking rhythmic patterns. Gamelan Chandra Kanchana is composed of Bard College students while Gamelan Giri Mekar features musicians from the Hudson Valley community at large.
Admission is by suggested donation of $10. Bard students, staff, faculty, and children under 16 are free of charge. This concert is sponsored by Ethnomusicology at Bard College, and the Music, Asian Studies, and Religion programs.
