Citizen Science Teaching FellowBard College’s general science education initiative, Citizen Science, is seeking Teaching Fellows for January of 2018. This innovative program is designed to introduce students in their first year of college to the broad concept of scientific literacy.
Candidates must be Bard College students (any major). Undergraduate students must be in their sophomore or junior year of study. Teaching Fellows will be responsible for preparation of laboratory materials, set up and break down of the teaching laboratories, clean up of laboratory spaces, and monitoring of laboratory equipment and supply levels, among other duties.
Teaching Fellows will also provide office support to Citizen Science administrators and faculty during the January program. Finally, Teaching Fellows must be prepared to assist the Citizen Science faculty with classroom instruction, as requested by individual program faculty. Teaching Fellows will be supervised by and report to the Citizen Science Laboratory Coordinator, the Citizen Science Administrative Assistant, and ultimately the Director of Citizen Science.
Teaching Fellows will meet regularly with the Laboratory Coordinator and the Program Director throughout the fall semester for the required training. Training sessions will be held on Tuesday nights, from 6-9 p.m. starting October 3rd. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Students selected as Citizen Science Teaching Fellows will gain important experience in the preparation and implementation of biological teaching labs as well as fundamental teaching and classroom management skills. Students from all undergraduate academic programs are encouraged to apply. Students with laboratory experience will be given special consideration.
The dates that Teaching Fellows are required to be on campus for Citizen Science 2018 are Wednesday, January 3rd by 2:00 pm – Thursday, January 25th at 5:00 pm. Teaching Fellows will receive full room and board for the January intersession, in addition to a stipend.
Complete applications will be composed of a one-page letter of interest in the position, a resume (maximum 2 pages) detailing relevant experience or coursework, and the names and contact information for two references. At least one reference should be a member of the Bard community. Applications should be submitted by email only to Rebeca Patsey at [email protected]. Email subject line should read: “CSTF Application.” Review of applications begins immediately, and will continue until all positions are filled. Applications should be received by midnight on Sunday September 17, 2017 to be given full consideration.
