The Office for Gender Equity Film Series presents our last film of the semester, East of Eden (1955). A contemporary take on the biblical story of Cain and Abel directed by blacklisted Hollywood director Elia Kazan and starring James Dean. This film depicts the story of Cal, portrayed by Dean, a “troubled” young man competing with his older brother for their father’s love while also building a relationship with his estranged mother. East of Eden is a wonderful drama-marketed-as-romance that stars one of the more sensitive, vulnerable, and honest male characters of the ’50s, showing the audience, and Hollywood, that masculinity is more layered and less rigid than one may think.7:00 pm – 9:00 pm EST/GMT-5
