Lifetime Learning Institute
The Lifetime Learning Institute at Bard College is an all-volunteer organization of about 250 members that sponsors two seven-week semesters, intersession events in January, and special events throughout the year. Our presenters volunteer from our membership, the community and the Bard faculty.
Organization and Membership
LLI is a vibrant organization of people devoted to lifetime learning. The institute is part of a network of similar organizations, the Elderhostel Institute Network, at college campuses throughout the country. Members are encouraged to actively participate in study, discussion and the operation of the institute.
The LLI membership year begins in the fall and ends in the spring. Core classes meet on Fridays from late March to mid-May and from late September to mid-November, in five periods of one hour and twenty minutes on the campus of Bard College. LLI also offers off-Friday courses each semester. Intersession 2016 will run for four weeks In January with two presentations given each Wednesday. Admissions and Course Selection: Who Gets In and Who Gets What?
That’s the question that comes up every summer when application and registration forms go to the Registration Committee. Here’s the answer: most decisions are the luck of the draw. For new members, preference goes to past presenters, presenters scheduled for the fall and people with critical skills. For class registration, past and current presenters, LLI Council and very active volunteers receive preference for all classes, while producers, class managers and A/V techies receive preference for their assigned class only. All other decisions are by lottery. New Member Applications will be available in July, 2015.
Council and Committees
The LLI Council is the governing body of LLI and manages the overall functioning of the organization. The Council meets monthly; members are welcome to attend. A number of committees, including Curriculum, Class Support, Member Services, and Special Events,also welcome new volunteers.
The Bard College LLI Council Meets on the third Monday of every month excepting January and February when the meeting moves to the third Tuesday. Meetings are held in Bertelsmann Campus Center Room 214 at 9:30 a.m. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Bard College LLI Curriculum Committee meets on the second Tuesday of every month. Meetings are held in Bertelsmann Campus Center Room 214 at 10:00 a.m. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Donations, Grants and Incentives
- The Bard College Conservatory of Music - In 2012 LLI pledged $25,000 to the Bard Conservatory to be paid out over a five-year period. This donation was matched by an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant.
- Dean Stuart Stritzler-Levine Seniors- to-Seniors Scholarship - Selected graduating students receive grants to help them complete their senior projects. They are competitively chosen by a committee from the college and may use the grant in any way they deem necessary. Prior to graduation the recipients make a presentation at a High Tea hosted by the members of LLI.
- The Bard High School/Early College Summer Intern Incentive- Bard's high school in NYC offers selected students the opportunity to graduate high school with two years of college credit. In the summer before their final year many of the students participate in unpaid internships. LLI provides a small stipend to four students to pay their expenses during this time.
- The Bard Center for Civic Engagement Community Action Awards - LLI has donated funds to CCE to support student internships, travel, and other costs associated with student research projects related to civic engagement.
