Applications
There are two ways to apply to Bard College:
- 1. Students may use the regular Bard
application
or
- if
they would prefer
to use the Common
Application.
All students using the Common
Application must submit a supplementary
essay .
All international students MUST fill out the Foreign
Student Declaration of Finances. No admissions
decisions
will be made until this form is received by the admissions office.
We understand you may be applying to many other
colleges but it is most helpful to the admission committee if you
use your application to tell us why you specifically think Bard is
a good match for you. Remember to look closely at our curriculum
and academic programs before you answer this question.
As standard
paper sizes differ from country to country Bard requests that where
ever possible all materials sent to Bard College be printed on
paper 8.5" by 11" (21.5 cm X 28cm). All recommendations
and essays should be typed where ever possible. All e-mail addresses
must be typed or written CLEARLY.
Bard College recognizes and is familiar with many different grading and educational systems used around the world. If you have taken A, AS or O level or equivalent exams you may send copies of the certificates validated or signed by a teacher or school official. If you have competed on a national or international level in an academic competition you may send a certified copy of this certificate with the appropriate translation. If you have received awards or certificates for extracurricular achievements is NOT necessary to send copies or translations of these, we will accept a listing of these with your application. You may send up to 10 slides of any artwork you have done, or include a DVD or CD, please remember artistic supplements are not necessary for admission.
Financial Aid
International studentsrequesting financial aid must fill out
the Foreign
Student Financial Aid form. Bard is one of the few American
colleges and universities that offers financial
aid to international students. Scholarships, which are based on need, range from
several thousand dollars to full-tuition coverage. At Bard the average financial aid grant for
international students is $28,900—the full cost of attending Bard College per
year is approximately
$50,000 plus about $2,500 for books and personal expenses. The financial aid budget is not unlimited; the college will only admit
a student if there are resources—either personal funds or college grants and
loans—adequate to pay for his
or
her expenses. Please see the Financial
Aid for International Students webpage.
Scholarships
Bard College offers full-tuition scholarships to a limited number
of students who are interested in studying in the area of science
(math, physics, biology, chemistry or computer science) or in the
area of economics.
Distinguished Scientist Scholars Program (DSS)
requires a separate application
form which is part of our application
packet. This
is a scholarship that can offer up to four years full-tuition
for students committed to studying Natural Science and Mathematics.
It is awarded to 10 students each year. All students applying
for the DSS will still need to pay approximately $11,500 per year for
room and board and fees plus books and personal expenses. Students who demonstrate they are unable
to meet this cost will not be offered a DSS scholarship.
The Levy
Economics Institute Scholarship is a discretionary scholarship awarded to
academically outstanding high school seniors who show
a keen interest in pursuing the study of economics. There is
no specific application form for this scholarship but students
who
wish to be considered for a Levy Scholarship should clearly
state their area of interest in their application to Bard. Potential Levy scholars
can use their application essay to address an issue in economics
that they have studied or that is of particular concern to
them.
Advanced Standing/College Credit
Bard College has a set of distribution requirements that must be satisfied by all students prior to graduation. Students entering Bard with college credits earned in high school will get credit for these classes but will not be able to use this credit to satisfy any distribution requirements. These credits will be considered 'elective credits'. (Only college classes taken at an actual college or university can satisfy distribution requirements). Students may receive 4 credits for each IB and A level subjects, as well as other international high school programs, as determined by the Registrar, to a maximum of one year of credit. To be eligible for credit IB students must score 5 or above in individual subjects. 'A' level students must have a C or higher to receive credit. AP students must score a 5 on their AP exams to receive credit. We also recognize and give credits for various other educational systems such as the Swiss Maturita and the German Abitur. Bard College does NOT require any sort of standardized testing such as the SAT’s SAT II’s or the ACT’s but you are welcome to submit this information if you have taken these exams. Any questions regarding exact transferal of advanced credit should be made after the student has received an admission decision and directed to Peter Gadsby the Registrar (gadsby@bard.edu).
English language profiency
Candidates whose first language is not English must submit the result of the
Test of English as a Foreign Lanuguage (TOEFL) - with a minimum score of 600
(paper based) 250 (computer based) and 100 (internet based). Bard College also
accepts the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum

fall admission. The deadline is November 1st for Spring transfer
