Invention and the Art of Revision
(December 4 – December 6, 2009)
Weekend Workshops
This workshop focuses on revision: what it is, how to teach it, and how it relates to reader response. Working with their own and students' texts, participants seek the roots of revision, exploring how the writing process draws attention to the places in a story, essay, or poem that invite revision, and how revision occurs before a first draft. When we revise or ask students to revise, it's often because we have an end product in mind that eventually we will assess. Radical revision is about moving toward a product. Workshop participants craft their own revision prompts, reflect on the values that inform those prompts, and practice making their values explicit. The workshop concludes with a conversation about assessment, specific rubrics, and grading criteria. Prior participation in either Writing and Thinking or Writing to Learn is preferred.
