“The poem of the mind in the act of finding”: John Ashbery, Wallace Stevens, and the Influence of Art and the French Symbolist Poets

November 2, 2012

This workshop explores the connections between the poets Ashbery and Stevens, and the influence that art and the French symbolists poets had on their writing. We also learn about our contemporary linguistic landscape and how to embrace language in unexpected ways. We master methods to challenge students’ conceptions and assumptions about the nature of poetry and poetic form and learn how to encourage student analysis and the uncovering of their own imaginative responses to language and poetry.

Texts: Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror by John Ashbery (Penguin, 1990); Wallace Stevens’s essay “Relations between Poetry and Painting” from The Necessary Angel (Vintage, 1965). Individual poems will be provided.
