This service enables Bard students, faculty, and staff to obtain from other libraries research materials, such as books and photocopies of journal articles, that are not in our collections. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests generally take a week and a half to fill, so plan accordingly. (Read Copyright restrictions).
Who can use ILL?
Any Bard student or faculty or staff member may request materials through ILL. Community and alumni/ae library members must initiate interlibrary borrowing at their local libraries.
How to Submit an ILL Request?
Faculty, Levy Scholars and Graduate students:
Check the ConnectNY catalog to see if the needed books, or other materials are in the Bard or ConnectNY Collections. Check our AtoZ Journal List to see if the periodical you need is subscribed to by Bard.
ILL request forms for books and journals are available at the Information Desk on the first floor and in Room 203.
A request form must be submitted for each title that is needed. Request forms must be filled out carefully and completely in order to avoid costly and frustrating delays. They should include a needed by date, the amount of charges you will accept, and the source of the citation (database, index, or bibliography).
Record the ISSN number on your journal request form. This eight-digit number may be found in the citation if it is from an online index or search The Serials Directory.
When searching many of our indexes, please note that chapter titles as well as article titles are indexed, check the "source" line in each citation to determine if the citation is a journal or a book.
All completed ILL forms must be reviewed by a staff member either at the Information Desk or in Room 203.
You will be notified via campus mail when your material arrives.
Photocopies of journal articles will be held at the main desk for pickup. Books will be held in and must be returned to Room 203. If there are charges, articles are held in Room 203.
Charges
Many libraries now charge the borrowing institution for ILL service. We always attempt to fill requests at noncharging institutions, but you must indicate on your application whether you are willing to accept a charge. All charges must be paid, by personal check or money order, when the materials are received. Student accounts cannot be charged for this purpose.
Loan Periods and Overdue Penalties
The lending institution determines the loan period for all materials, which must be returned by their due date. If ILL materials become one week overdue, the borrower's Bard library privileges may be suspended until the materials are returned. Longer suspensions, of up to a semester, may be imposed if ILL materials become two weeks overdue. Borrowers are responsible for any overdue fines or replacement costs and must comply with any special loan conditions stipulated by the lending institution.
Renewal
Renewal requests can be made at the ILL office in Stevenson 203, by phone (845-758-7502 or 845-758-7409), or by email at ILL@bard.edu at least two days before the due date. Some lending institutions do not permit renewals.
