B.S., Northwestern University; Ed.M., Ed.D., Harvard University. Scholarly interests focus on adolescent identity development and how it is shaped by factors associated with ability/disability, ethnicity, gender, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. Current research examines the school, family, and peer relationships of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth. Former positions include instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education; editor of the Harvard Education Letter; high school teacher in South Yarmouth and Cambridge, Massachusetts; and vice-chair of the Massachusetts Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth. Edited books: Adolescents at School: Perspectives on Youth, Identity, and Education (2nd edition, 2008); Teaching Immigrant and Second-Language Students: Strategies for Success (2004). Recipient of Association of Educational Publishers Award and National Press Club Award for articles in the Harvard Education Letter.
