Alternative Preparation Programs

"Helping disciplinary experts become effective teachers in New York City public school classrooms."

Overview

Building on its ten years of history of emphasizing the integration of graduate studies in the subject area and education with practical experiences in classrooms, the Bard MAT is now extending its work in teacher preparation to include candidates who have already completed an advanced degree in their subject area and wish to enter New York City public school without delay. The Trans C program offers initial New York State certification, allowing candidates to become salaried teachers with ongoing support from the Bard MAT program faculty.

The Transitional C Certificate program invites candidates who possesses a graduate degree in a designated area of study to teach that subject area as a New York State certified teacher in a public middle or high school while they complete a two-year program of study. These studies earn graduate and support candidates in their first years of teaching through coursework connected to their teaching practice. This coursework satisfies New York State requirements towards the Professional Certificate, which is the certification required to stay in teaching subsequent to the Transitional C or Initial Certificate.

The Trans C curriculum is a two-year program of studies adapted from the core educational courses of the Bard MAT program and applied to the daily work and responsibilities of teaching. Trans C candidates earn 18 hours of graduate credit in a sequence of practical studies that link theory to practice, helping the candidate in her/his first years of teaching to successfully meet the challenges of addressing the learning needs of a diverse population of students with an emphasis on using the “text” of their own teaching experiences as a primary source for study and reflection.
