In addition to the permanent faculty at Bard, the weekend intensive structure of the program supports a remarkable set of cutting-edge practitioners as program faculty. Some of our faculty teach full time; some share their expertise for set modules. Guest lectures and case presentations are a prominent feature of the program. Ph.D. (Economics), University of Michigan; B.A. (Geology), Williams College. Goodstein is the author of a college textbook, Economics and the Environment, (John Wiley and Sons, 2010) now in its sixth edition; Fighting for Love in the Century of Extinction: How Passion and Politics Can Stop Global Warming (University Press of New England, 2007); and The Trade-off Myth: Fact and Fiction about Jobs and the Environment (Island Press, 1999). Articles by Goodstein have appeared in, among other outlets, The Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Land Economics, Ecological Economics, and Environmental Management. His research has been featured in The New York Times, Scientific American, Time, Chemical and Engineering News, The Economist, USA Today, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He serves on the editorial board of Sustainability: The Journal of Record, and Environment, Workplace and Employment, and is on the steering committee of Economics for Equity and the Environment. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Follett Corporation, and is on the advisory committee for Chevrolet's Clean Energy Initiative. In addition Goodstein directs two national educational initiatives on global warming: Campus 2 Congress (C2C) Fellows and The National Climate Seminar. In recent years, he has coordinated climate education events at over 2,500 colleges, universities, high schools, and other institutions across the country.

Lee Boyar is a CPA who received his training in public accounting at Deloitte, where he specialized in real estate and international tax. A businessman and investor with extensive experience in securities analysis and investment advisory, Lee remains a principal at Boyar Asset Management, a registered investment advisor. As an analyst at CKX (subsequently acquired by Apollo Global Management) he worked as part of the team that acquired Muhammad Ali’s marketing rights for $50 million. An avid long-distance runner, he competes in distances from the 5k to the half marathon and is passionate about maintaining parks in urban areas.

Colleen Burke has contributed to the book, Education for Judgment: The Artistry of Case Discussion Leadership (Harvard Business School Press, 1992) and Rediscovering the Soul of Business: A Renaissance of Values (Sterling and Stone, 1996). She has years of consulting experience, most recently under Colleen Burke Strategic Consulting for companies such as Arthur Andersen LLP/Andersen Consulting/Accenture, IBM, Lotus, Hermann Miller, Princeton University, Harvard Business School, RR Donnelly, Polaroid and the City of New York. She was the founder and CEO for The Children’s Design Center in Saratoga Springs, NY and the Co-Owner and VP Marketing for the Saratoga Springs Water Company. She served as the deputy and acting executive director for New York State Council on the Arts and served as New York Governor’s policy staff for arts and culture. She was the Executive Assistant to the Chairman and CEO and Private Equity Partner for Great Western United Corporation in Denver, Colorado. She is currently teaching courses such as Entrepreneurship and Small Business, Advanced Entrepreneurship and The Skidmore Saratoga Consulting Partnership, and Introduction to Business and Organizations at Skidmore College.
Donald R. Carlson
J.D. (1986), Harvard Law School; B.A. (Political Economy, 1983), Williams College. Professor of Williams College (1990–1992). His primary business focus is in the alternative energy sector, and he serves as an advisor and/or investor in a number of fast-growing wind and solar firms. In 1997 Carlson joined the Corporate Executive Board, a cross-industry best practices research firm in Washington, D.C., acting as steward of the firm’s growth strategy. He launched several successful new membership-based businesses serving the strategic research needs of senior executives at Fortune 1000 firms, and was frequently featured as a speaker at annual retreats for CEB member executives. Carlson has held several management positions at Goldman Sachs including chief knowledge officer for the Investment Banking Division and chief of staff for the Office of General Counsel. Throughout his five years at the company, Carlson was a frequent teacher of leadership and negotiation seminars for the firm’s executive education program, now known as Goldman Sachs University. He led Carlson Consulting, Inc., consulting with select clients to help them hone leadership skills and refine strategy. He worked with groups such as the World Economic Forum, the New York Private Equity Network, and a major global investment bank to develop and lead seminars in principled negotiation skills and leading with emotional intelligence. Most recently, Don became a founding partner of The Forefront Law Group-an innovative law firm that unites talented experienced attorneys with growth stage companies to provide expert counsel. In addition to his work as a lawyer, Don works with select clients to help them hone leadership skills and refine business strategy.
M.B.A. (Management), New York University; M.C.E. (Environmental Engineering & Science) Manhattan College; B.C.E. (Civil Engineering), Manhattan College. Cusack is the founder of Gifford Park Associates (GPA), a sustainability management advisory firm specializing in the areas of sustainability finance, management and implementation, responsible investing, clean technologies, climate change, environmental risks disclosure, and the relationship between the sustainability and financial performance of firms. Clients have included a variety of multinational corporations, financial firms, and international agencies and governments, including the UAE, UN, OECD, and US State Dept. Prior to starting GPA, Cusack was a senior executive in North America & Europe for several cleantech subsidiaries of Asea Brown Boveri (ABB). He served as liaison with ABB’s energy/environmental VC fund and as advisor to ABB Environmental Affairs. In addition to developing and teaching the “Finance for Sustainable Business” course at Bard, he also has developed a course called “Sustainable Finance,” that he teaches at Iona College.
J. Skyler Fernandes
Havard University (Foreign Policy and Quantum Physics); B.A. (Economics and International Relations), New York University. J. Skyler Fernandes is a partner at Centripetal Capital Partners, a multi-stage venture capital fund with an innovative fund structure. Fernandes focuses on consumer internet, online services/marketplaces, enterprise SaaS, and commercializable high-tech. He is also the founding partner of One Match Ventures, a seed fund focused on internet/high-tech companies. Fernandes gave the first TED Talk on Venture Capital: Innovating the Financing of Innovation and has developed key entrepreneur resources, such as The “Best” Startup Pitch Deck, Top 10 Lies Entrepreneurs Tell Investors, and Various Rounds of Investment. He has co-founded several companies and is an advisor to a number of startups. He also leads a number of global initiatives, including the Missing Middle Initiative, launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos, focused on creating funds that invest $100K-$3M, a critical financing gap for early-mid stage businesses globally. He is a venture mentor at ER Accelerator, a New York City incubator, as well as the Stamford Innovation Center. Additionally, Fernandes served as COO and is currently on the Board of Directors of the South African Chamber of Commerce in America (SACCA). Fernandes is a frequent speaker on venture capital and entrepreneurship at such venues as FundingPost, CROWDFUNDx, Harvard Business School, New York University, Wharton Business School, The Stamford Innovation Center, New York Venture Summit, The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), NASDAQ, and The United Nations.
KrosinskyCary is the co-editor of the book: "Sustainable Investing: The Art of Long Term Performance," with Nick Robins, HSBC's Head of Climate Change, which also contains contributions from leading contemporary thinkers such as Abyd Karmali, Valery Lucas-Leclin, and Steve Viederman. He is the Executive Director of the Network for Sustainable Financial Markets, and previously, he was senior vice president for Trucost. Krosinsky was a member of the 70 person Expert Group in 2005 that created the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) of the United Nations, which has since been committed to by more than $15 trillion worth of fund managers and asset owners, and he continues to participate in various UN inititatives. He worked in collaboration with Trucost on their award winning 2006 UK Trust Carbon Footprint study, as well as the IFC sponsored Carbon Counts Asia 2007 report, the latter having been issued at the December 2007 UN meetings in Bali. He also has worked with the Los Angeles Times on stories regarding Warren Buffet, and has written and spoken publically over time on issues including the union of the environment and institutional ownership on CNBC, in the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere globally. In addition to classes at Bard, Krosinsky has taught in the Sustainable Investing and Finance curriculum at Columbia University's Earth Institute since 2009, and now also in partnership with the RFK Center for Human Rights & Justice as well as MBA classes at the University of Maryland.
B.S. (Agricultural Economics), University of Vermont. David Lamoureux is a Doctoral Candidate at the New School for Social Research. His research interests include alternatives to neoclassical economics as the dominant paradigm and the historical foundations of contemporary economic thought. He has also taught economics in the New School's Graduate Program in International Affairs.
M.P.P. (Public Policy), Columbia University; B.A. (Economics and International Studies), Manhattanville College. Deborah Leipziger is an author, lecturer and advisor in the field of corporate responsibility. Her publications include The Corporate Responsibility Code Book, now in its second edition (Greenleaf, 2010), Living Corporate Citizenship (FT, 2002), and Corporate Citizenship: Successful Strategies of Responsible Companies, (FT, 1998). She is the author of Social Accountability 8000: The Definitive Guide to the New Social Standard (FT Prentice Hall, 2001). She advises companies, governments, and UN agencies on corporate responsibility and sustainability issues. She has advised leading multinational companies on strategic and supply chain issues, as well as a wide range of corporate responsibility initiatives, including the UN Global Compact, the Global Reporting Initiative, the UN Environment Programme, and Social Accountability International. Ms. Leipziger is a Senior Fellow at the Lewis Institute at Babson College, where she is working on a textbook on social value creation. As of 2013, Leipziger is an Adjunct Faculty member at the Simmons School of Management. She serves as a member of several boards including the Global Responsible Investment Advisory and Oversight Committee of Aviva plc and the Sustainable Futures Advisory Committee of Alliance Trust Investments in the UK. She has served on the International Board of Advisors of Instituto Ethos in Brazil and the Advisory Board for the Center for Ethics at Manhattanville College, USA.
J.D., Loyola Law School; B.S. (Sociology, Political Science). L. Hunter Lovins is president and founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions (NCS). NCS educates senior decision makers in business, government, and civil society to restore and enhance natural and human capital while increasing prosperity and quality of life. Lovins is also currently a faculty member at Bainbridge Graduate Institute and the chief insurgent of the Madrone Project. Lovins has consulted for scores of industries, governments, and large and small companies worldwide. Recipient of such honors as the Right Livelihood Award, Lindbergh Award, and Leadership in Business, she was named Time Magazine 2000 Hero of the Planet and in 2009 Newsweek dubbed her a “Green Business Icon.” She has co-authored nine books and hundreds of papers, including the 1999 book Natural Capitalism, 2006 e-book Climate Protection Manual for Cities, and the 2009 book Transforming Industry in Asia. She has served on the boards of governments, nonprofit organizations, and for-profit companies. Lovins’s areas of expertise include natural capitalism, sustainable development, globalization, energy and resource policy, economic development, climate change, land management, fire rescue, and emergency medicine. She developed the Economic Renewal Project and helped write many of its manuals on sustainable community economic development. She was a founding professor of business at Presidio Graduate School, one of the first accredited programs offering an M.B.A. in sustainable management.
MPA; Columbia University. George Perlov is a marketing and communications consultant based in New York City who helps nonprofit, government and corporate clients improve their impact in addressing a host of social, environmental and health-related issues through strategic planning, research and evaluation. He was previously Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation at the Advertising Council, the largest producer of public service communications campaigns in the US. In this position he was responsible for advising the planning and research process for the Council’s campaigns, monitoring and measuring of donated media, evaluating campaign effectiveness, proprietary research the Council conducts on public service directors and social issues, international issues, as well as special strategic initiatives. Prior to Ad Council, he spent over 10 years in the commercial advertising world, in the areas of account management and strategic planning. He has also lived and worked in Japan, both in the private sector and as a Mombusho English Fellow, teaching in rural public schools.
As a public speaker, Perlov has addressed audiences at the Advertising Research Foundation Conference, the Independent Sector Conference, the Academic Educational Research Association Conference and the National Community Service Conference, in addition to numerous speaking engagements in Europe and the Caribbean. He is a two-time recipient of the EFFIE award for effective advertising, which is awarded by the American Marketing Association. He is a graduate of Oberlin College and has a Masters of Public Administration degree from Columbia University.
Ph.D. (18th Century British Literature), University of Virginia; B.A., Middlebury College. Ramaley taught basic and advanced composition, Shakespeare, and 18th and 19th-century British literature at UVA and was formerly the Assistant to the Director of the UVA Science and Engineering Libraries. She teaches graduate students to write clearly, persuasively, and reflectively for academic and lay readers. She is currently also affiliated with Bard's Master of Arts in Teaching Program.
Ph.D. (Economics), Rutgers University; B.A., Ohio University. Roy Rotheim is the author of New Keynesian Economics/Post Keynesian Alternatives and over two dozen articles. Rotheim is a professor and holds the Quadracci Chair in Social Responsibility at Skidmore College. His main areas of research lie in post-Keynesian economic theory, economic methodology, and the history of economic thought. He has also been a visiting scholar in the faculty of economics and politics of Cambridge University, and visiting professor at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza.'
M.A. (International Economics), Johns Hopkins University; B.A. (Government), Cornell University. Bruce Schlein works as Director of Corporate Sustainability with Citi business and operations units to identify and develop solutions for emerging environmental issues and opportunities, with a focus on climate change and clean energy. Bruce leads an internal working group on energy efficiency financing. Previously, he worked as a sustainability specialist for Bechtel on petrochemical and civil projects in China and Romania, and for international development agencies including Save the Children, Catholic Relief Services in Bosnia Herzegovina and the U.S. Peace Corps in Papua New Guinea. He currently teaches Corporate Social Responsibility as an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.
Ph.D. (Economics), University of California, Berkeley; B.A., University of Delhi; M.A., Delhi School of Economics; M.Phil., Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, master’s thesis on the conflicts between utilitarianism and libertarianism. Research interests include natural resources and environmental economics, applied microeconomics, game theory, philosophy of economics, and history of economic thought. Sethi has worked on energy-economy-environment linkages and associated policy issues in India; fisheries management under uncertainty; costs and benefits of renewable energy; and water policy in developing countries. Sethi was recently engaged by Mexico’s Environmental Protection Agency to participate in a forum on ocean policy management. Sethi’s research has appeared in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, and the Journal of Real Estate, and in publications for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Redefining Progress. He authored a companion volume to Jeffrey Perloff’s Microeconomics. He has presented research talks at academic institutions (Binghamton University and the University of California, Santa Barbara), research institutes (Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook and Tata Energy Research Institute, India), policy forums (OECD workshop, Oaxaca, Mexico), and numerous professional society meetings.
M.B.A., Stanford University; B.S. (Physics and Chemistry), University of London. Rick Stuckey serves as an Advisor at Helix Commerce International Inc. Mr. Stuckey is a world-class Knowledge Management expert, well versed in established and emerging technologies. Most recently, he was the partner responsible for Accenture's Global Collaboration & Knowledge Management (C&KM) practice and was responsible for developing its C&KM strategy, internal and external marketing, development of market offerings, promotional activities with clients and engagement quality assurance. Mr. Stuckey was also the Global head of the Human Performance Applications group, where he was responsible for determining and building the technical skills necessary to deliver C&KM and e-Learning solutions to clients. He serves as Director of Camilion Solutions, Inc. He has also made presentations on Knowledge Management at public conferences including COMDEX and KM World.
Ph.D. (Psychology), University of California at Los Angeles; B.S. (Mathematics), City University of New York. Wirtenberg recently wrote, Building a Culture for Sustainability: People, Planet and Profits in a New Green Economy, in which she shares insights on how nine major companies are holistically integrating sustainability throughout their operations. Jeana was lead editor of The Sustainable Enterprise Fieldbook: When It All Comes Together, published in 2008. She was a lead author of Creating a Sustainable Future: A Global Study of Current Trends and Possibilities, 2007-2017. Jeana is president and CEO of Transitioning to Green. Her company develops individual and organizational capacity to make sustainability take root. Working with CEO's, Presidents, and VP's of Fortune 500 companies, Jeana has helped organizations reach the highest levels of performance excellence by aligning with business strategy. She has held senior organizational, professional, and leadership development positions in major companies-AT&T and the Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), as well as in the Federal government at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and the National Institute of Education. Jeana is a co-founder of the Institute for Sustainable Enterprise at Fairleigh Dickinson University and teaches at Bard College’s MBA in Sustainability Program.
