71 Bard students spent winter intercession, 2007, rehabilitating an elementary school in the Broadmoor neighborhood of New Orleans. The school had been untouched since the storm, left to rot in the center of the neighborhood. The Broadmoor Improvement Association, a community-driven neighborhood association, asked for Bard's help in rehabilitating the school so that it could be re-opened later that year. Working alongside community members, Bard students removed all toxic mold and other hazardous materials left by the storm. In February of that year, the state board of education granted the Broadmoor community the right to re-open their school, an instrumental piece of the revitalization of the neighborhood.
