Bard Urban Studies in New Orleans Program

leaf iconLiving in New Orleans

Students will be accommodated in single rooms on the campus of Xavier University in the heart of New Orleans. The campus is a streetcar ride away from the French Quarter, Downtown, and Uptown shopping, galleries, and music. All meals will be provided by Xavier University, and students will have full access to all university facilities (24-hour security, health services, library, gym, and more).

Founded in 1925 to provide outstanding educational opportunities to African Americans in and around New Orleans, Xavier remains among the most academically prominent and socially vital universities in Louisiana. Current Xavier undergraduates participate in the Bard program and are an asset to the classroom and the Urban Studies community.

As a university and as an institution deeply invested in the future of New Orleans, Xavier offers a unique and invaluable vantage point for students studying and engaging with the city. Xavier remains centrally involved in all levels of the region’s rebuilding process: University President Norman C. Francis has served as chairman of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, and, through partnerships with community and business leaders, Xavier has formed a community development corporation to address housing, living, and economic conditions in its immediate neighborhood.

Be aware that major city challenges — transportation, infrastructure — will both inform and impact your experience.
