Dean of the College Presents
Scenarios of Armageddon in the Fundamentalisms of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
Wednesday, December 4, 2013
Olin Humanities, Room 102
Presented by Bruce Chilton
Armageddon has occupied a privileged place in end-time imagination for millennia. But during the last century American interpreters of the Apocalypse devised a countdown and a setting for the final, eschatological war. They located the ultimate confrontation with Satan in Jerusalem, specifically on the Temple Mount, and tied its chronology to the foundation of the State of Israel. This Christian Zionism is often marketed as a traditional reading of the Apocalypse, but its innovations are manifest -- and sufficiently powerful that they have been embraced by Fundamentalists of Islam and Judaism, as well as of Christianity.
