Contemporaneous performs Seeing Is Believing
, an unbelievable program of two new works by Michael Harrison and music by Nico Muhly and Shawn Jaeger.
Drawing on his expertise in just intonation, Indian ragas and rhythmic cycles, Harrison’s music evokes what the New York Times
calls, “a new harmonic world…of vibrant sound.” With "Tessellations" and "Orchestral Modules," written specifically for Contemporaneous and featuring guests Nitin Mitta (tabla), Aaron Shragge (tanpura) and Tim Parsons (countertenor), Harrison brings to life a new chapter in his explorations into these exciting worlds.
In addition to Harrison’s premieres, Contemporaneous will perform Nico Muhly’s effervescent six-string electric violin concerto "Seeing Is Believing" with Contemporaneous violinist Josh Henderson. Featuring Contemporaneous soprano Lucy Dhegrae, the roots for Kentucky composer Shawn Jaeger’s poignant and beautiful "Letters Made with Gold" come from musical gestures and song texts from Appalachian folk music.
