Forro Brazilian Music Workshop with Matuto
Thursday, April 30, 2015

Interested in Brazilian music?
In advance of their evening concert at the Fisher Center, the New York City–based band Matuto presents a public workshop in Forró music, a tradition from the Northeast of Brazil dating to the late 1800s and brought into modern times by the great composer, singer, and accordionist Luiz Gonzaga. Matuto celebrates this rocking dance music with the idiomatic forró instrumentation: accordion, zabumba, triangle, and cavaquinho. With up-tempo songs in Portuguese, the music of Matuto speaks of romance, music, hard times, and the resilience of the people of the sertão, the dry interior region of northeastern Brazil. Students attending the workshop will be guided by the band in learning some classic forró tunes and dance. Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists (no previous experience singing in Portuguese required). Tickets for the evening show are free to students before April 23. Students can reserve tickets in three ways: by emailng [email protected]; online with the code BARDSTU; or by calling the Box Office at 845-758-7900, Monday – Friday from 10am to 5pm. Tickets are $15 for faculty, staff, and the community.
