Center for Curatorial Studies Presents
In Conversation: Willie Birch and Robin Wallis Atkinson
Friday, April 19, 2013
CCS Bard Video Gallery
Artist Willie Birch discusses his new artworks from the on-going Seventh Ward Series with curator / CCS Bard graduate student Robin Wallis Atkinson.
As a supplemental event for the master's thesis exhibition CROSS//ROADS, the artist Willie Birch will sit down with curator Robin Wallis Atkinson to discuss the inspiration for the new works from his on-going Seventh Ward Series. Drawing his inspiration from the built environment of his neighborhood in New Orleans, Birch mixes symbolism, metaphor, and abstraction to create visually and conceptually dense images. The artist will discuss the construction of these images along with the social and historical background for his practice, as well as the inspiration for the artworks currently on view in the Hessel Museum of Art. The artist and curator, in a collaboration spanning three years, will address how the artistic and the curatorial can act as sources of both inspiration and friction, and how these tensions develop and enrich over time. For more information, call 845-758-7598, e-mail [email protected],
