From cleaning up vomit in the Old Gym, to cleaning up guns in America: Pia Carusone '03
On January 8, 2011, a mentally ill young man shot Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in the head, killed six of her constituents, and wounded 12 others. Since that tragedy in Tucson, America has seen many more mass shootings – but no response from Congress.
Pia Carusone serves as the Executive Director of Americans for Responsible Solutions, the organization she co-founded in January 2013 with former Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly to advocate for common-sense measures to reduce gun violence in America. Prior to her current position, Pia was the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security and served as Chief of Staff to Congresswoman Giffords. She has spent more than a decade working for various political candidates and campaigns around the country, and was recently named one of Politico’s “50 Politicos to Watch. Originally from Saratoga Springs, NY, Pia is a graduate of Bard College and now resides in Washington, DC.
Since Americans for Responsible Solutions launched earlier this year, more than 500,000 individuals have signed up as members, comprising a diverse coalition from all 50 states that includes Democrats, Republicans, gun owners and non-gun owners alike.
