Center for Curatorial Studies Presents
The Visitor Talks : Plus One - Brian O’Doherty + Prem Krishnamurthy
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm EST/GMT-5
Brian O’Doherty (b. 1928, Ireland) has led a remarkable and multifaceted career. He practiced as a medical doctor for five years in Dublin, studied visual perception at Cambridge university's experimental psychology laboratories, and is an Honorary Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He relocated to the USA in 1957, where he hosted two television shows on art and culture. O’Doherty served as an art critic for the New York Times and as editor-in-chief of Art in America magazine. He edited and designed the groundbreaking “conceptual issue” of the multimedia magazine-in-a-box Aspen (1967), as well as authored the seminal book Inside the White Cube. While part-time director of the NEA’s visual arts and media program, he helped make Soho a magnet for artists, coined the term “alternative space,” and championed early video art. From 1972 to 2008, he worked as an artist under the pseudonym Patrick Ireland, one of several "disguises" adapted over the decades. The deeply political name responds to a British atrocity in Northern Ireland. Patrick Ireland was buried during a funeral in Dublin (2008). O'Doherty has mounted over forty solo exhibitions in Europe and the U.S. and has been the subject of several museum retrospectives, as well as gallery exhibitions , including Connecting the ... (P! / Simone Subal Gallery, 2014). He is the author of several novels, including The Deposition of Father McGreevy (2000), which was nominated for the Booker Prize. His most recent novel, The Crossdresser’s Secret, was published by Sternberg Press in February 2014.
