Mamadouba ‘Mimo’ Camara is a former lead dancer with Les Ballets Africains, the national preforming troupe of Guinea, West Africa. For 18 years he traveled the world, sharing the rich heritage of his country’s lively, colorful traditional arts. Since making his home in the Hudson Valley in 1995, he has taught classes to adults and children alike, formed a performing group comprised of Guineans and Americans, and established himself as ‘le grand’ of the African arts community in the region. His joy, pride, and enthusiasm are infectious.
Together with his wife Pam Camara, they will lead workshops in traditional drum and dance of Guinea.
Playing either hand or stick drum, participants will learn various parts of one of Guinea’s complex rhythms during the first part of the evening from 5-6:15. We’ll then learn the corresponding dance steps to this rhythm from 6:15-7:30.
Open to Bard College students, faculty, staff and community members free of charge.
