Screenwriting as Earth Art
Jon Raymond will discuss his collaboration with director Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, Meek's Cutoff, and Night Moves), with special attention to issues of failure, chance, and regional imagination. We all know there are excellent stories in our own backyards. The lives of our families and neighbors are rife with tales of betrayal, secrecy, and strange acts of rebellion. How do you dig them up? How do you shape them into something compelling to the rest of the world? How do you attach them to a larger sense of history and politics? Also, how do you live through the soul-damaging experience of early creative failure?--
Jon Raymond is the author of the novels Freebird (forthcoming), Rain Dragon, and The Half-Life, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2004, as well as the short-story collection Livability, a Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers selection and winner of the Oregon Book Award. He is also the screenwriter of the film Meek’s Cutoff and cowriter of the films Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, and Night Moves. He also cowrote the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, winner of five Emmy Awards. Raymond’s writing has appeared in Tin House, The Village Voice, Bookforum, Artforum, and other publications. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
