2017 Fall Mellon Lecture by N. Katherine Hayles
Since Gutenberg, printing technologies changed only modestly through five centuries of print production. However, starting in the mid–20th century, computational media began to be integrated with printing technologies with the invention of phototypesetters. This initiated a new era of reading, writing, and book production that I call postprint, to mark the ontological rupture separating it from traditional print techniques. This talk will sketch in this history and explore its implications for the transition from humans conceived as autonomous individuals to humans as part of cognitive assemblages that include networked and programmable machines. For more information, call 845-758-6822.
