Vasily Vereshchagin in the United States: Russian Cultural Diplomacy in the 1880s–1900s
Olin, Room 102
5:00 pm – 6:30 pm
A Talk by Maria Chernysheva, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences at St. Petersburg State University
Vasily Vereshchagin in the United States: Russian Cultural Diplomacy in the 1880s–1900s

The lecture focuses on the activities of a leading Russian artist Vasily Vereshchagin during his trips to the United States, the Philippines and Cuba in 1888–1891 and 1901–1902. Vereshchagin’s artistic and public activities in the USA have never been analyzed within the political context and from an interdisciplinary point of view as a remarkable, successful and telling example of Russian cultural diplomacy at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The talk aims to fill this gap and contribute new knowledge to both the study of Russian art and our understanding of diplomatic and cultural relations between Russia and the United States.
