Turning History into Fiction: What's Gained / What's Lost
RKC 103
6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Paul Goldberg, Novelist, journalist, author of The ChateauThe Yid, and The Final Act
How does fiction change our lives in the times of political crisis? What do we learn from works of literature that are nourished or powered by history? How do American dissidents of today compare to Soviet dissidents of the 1930-80s? What has literature gained -- and lost -- in the era of Trump and Putin? Come to a talk by the acclaimed novelist and journalist Paul Goldberg, author of two novels The Chateau (a comedy about Trump-supporting Russians), and The Yid (a comedy about Stalin’s death), and two non-fiction books about the Soviet human rights movement, The Final Act (with Ludmilla Alexeyeva) and The Thaw Generation, to discuss these questions and ask other questions of similar urgency and magnitude.
