Zelda Bas '16: A Student Perspective on the Language and Thinking Program
For Zelda, who was educated in France, L&T was helpful academically, familiarizing her with standard Bard classroom fare such as critical thinking, free writing, and discussion-based classes. “Not only did it help me figure out what was going to be expected of me during the four years at Bard, it also taught me to be comfortable speaking in front of other people—being in small classes and seeing what it's like to work with a small group.”
When asked what words of wisdom she would give to incoming first-years, Zelda advises students to “take advantage of Language and Thinking. It's a unique moment that goes by very fast.” The program immerses students in both academic and practical knowledge that will be critical for the next four years, such as getting an on-campus job, learning about one's peers, adjusting to Bard’s intimate classroom experience—even experiencing what it is to write a college-level essay for the first time. “There's nobody else on campus, so go out, get involved, and discover all these facets of Bard.”
