Pitkin, Ph.D.Barnard College, Columbia Universitywill give a talk“THE MEMORY OF MIRACLES: MODES OF TIBETAN BUDDHIST POWER”Accounts of holy individuals who display miraculous abilities appear frequently in Tibetan Buddhist literature, and remain popular among Tibetan Buddhists today. This talk examines the significance of miracle narratives in the life story of one twentieth century Tibetan Buddhist master. Contemporary Tibetan Buddhists remember and interpret his miracles in ways that reveal multiple Buddhist understandings of faith, reason, and power, and suggest the potential of Buddhist contributions to debates about religion and secularism in the modern world.
