IWT Writer as Reader Workshops

IWT’s Writer as Reader workshops model writing practices that support close reading and Common Core standards in all subjects, and invite secondary and college teachers to consider “writing to read” as a central classroom practice, one that shows rather than tells students how writing clarifies meaning in literary, historical, and nonfiction texts. Workshops include:1. Epistolary Meditations on Race in America: Between the World and Me and “My Dungeon Shook”2. “Suit the Action to the Word, the Word to the Action”: Macbeth on Stage and Page3. Writing Ourselves into the Journey: Homer’s Odyssey and Daniel Mendelsohn’s An Odyssey4. Call and Response: Heart of Darkness and Season of Migration to the North5. Lord of the Flies: Rethinking Survival6. Hearing God’s Trombones7. The Flint Water Crisis and Restorative Justice in the Classroom: The Poisoned City and Justice on Both Sides8. A Street in Bronzeville: Gwendolyn Brooks and the Chicago Black Renaissance9. Remembering Differently: Reading, Writing, and Rewriting History in Multimodal Literatures10. Reading/Writing Metamorphosis: Ovid and Kafka in the Anthropocene
