Bard Debate Union Wins Adelphi Tournament

Bard's parliamentary debate team: senior Ian Busher and junior Lee Gensler
Bard's parliamentary debate team, composed of junior Lee Gensler and senior Ian Busher, won the Adelphi Debate Tournament in Garden City, New York, over the weekend of February 16–17. Lee Gensler was also named third overall speaker at the tournament and Ian Busher sixth. The team faced challenges on their way to the final. "There was one team from Kings that we met in every single round and they beat us pretty solidly, but when it really mattered we won," said Gensler. She summarized the final motion of the tournament: "Would you tell people if you found out conclusively that God existed or didn't? We were saying you should tell people the truth." Busher adds, "We got the right side of the final motion, from our perspective." In all, five members of the Bard Debate Union participated in the tournament. New debaters Annie Cockrell and Isabel Filkins performed well, earning seven points, and Shaya French acted as a judge. The team heads to Western Connecticut State University on February 23–24 for the regional championships. Gensler says she's excited about regionals. "It's good to go into it from an encouraging place where you feel good about your abilities."
