Aston Magna’s 2013 season marks its 41st year, with renewed dedication to the mission of presenting engaging concerts of music from the late 16th to early 19th century. The five concert series will be held on Friday evenings, June 14, 21, and 28, and July 5 and 12 at 8 p.m. in Bard’s Olin Hall.

Bard College faculty member Karen Sullivan, Irma Brandeis Professor of Romance Cultures and Literature and director of Medieval Studies, is among the 175 winners of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation’s 89th annual competition for the United States and Canada. Sullivan has been awarded a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship for her work in Medieval and Romance literature.

U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Platt To Speak at Bard College on April 24

Nicholas Platt—longtime China specialist, three-time U.S. ambassador (Pakistan, Zambia, and the Philippines), and author of the published memoir China Boys—will share his experiences and insights gained from a long and distinguished career in the diplomatic service and as president of the Asia Society in New York. Platt’s talk, titled “China Then and Now,” will be held in Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College on Wednesday, April 24, at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Human rights major Lauren Blaxter ’13 (from Andover, Massachusetts), computer science major Ameer Shalabi ’16 (from Mas’ha in the West Bank), cultural anthropology major Nadine Tadros ’14 (from Fairfax, Virginia), and political studies major Daniel Gettinger ’13 (from Chevy Chase, Maryland) have together won a Davis award in support of the Bard Palestinian Youth Initiative (BPYI). BPYI, an entirely student-run organization, was founded in 2008 with the belief that constructive civil engagement, cultural exchange, and education are fundamental means to building a viable and sustainable Palestinian State.
