ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra (WCO), conducted by artistic director David Leighton, presents a concert version of Carmen, in the program “Fight Night at the Opera—Carmen,” to be performed at Bard College on Friday, March 9. Presented in cooperation with The Bard Center, the program begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. Tickets are $15 for adults; $5 for students; and free for Bard students, faculty, and staff. (This program is repeated on Saturday, March 10, at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center, 243 Hurley Avenune, Kingston; and on Sunday, March 11, at the Reformed Church of Saugerties, Main Street, Saugerties.)
Ars Choralis and the Hudson Valley Youth Chorale, both directed by Barbara Pickhardt, join the WCO in performing Bizet’s great tale of love, jealousy and fate. Soloists include Lunda Cornelius as Carmen, Cheryl Warfield as Micaela, Robert Poston as Don Jose, and Fredrick Redd as Escamillo, as well as Hudson Valley artists Cecelia Keehn as Frasquita and Danielle Woerner as Mercedes.
Ars Choralis is a Woodstock-based group of singers from all walks of life, drawn together by a mutual love of singing and a belief in the power of music to accomplish good in the world. In 1976, Barbara Pickhardt became their director, and in 1995, she founded the Hudson Valley Youth Chorale (HVYC) to offer talented children the opportunity to discover the joy of singing in a unique choral setting. The HVYC has toured Europe and performs throughout New York State. Innovative programming is a hallmark of both groups.
The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra presents an all-Beethoven program on Wednesday, April 25, in Olin Hall at Bard College. Artistic director David Leighton conducts the “Coriolan” Overture and Symphony No. 7 in A Major, and is the piano soloist in Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, “Emperor”. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, and free for Bard faculty, staff, and students on April 25. [The program is repeated on Saturday, April 28, at 8:00 p.m., at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center, 243 Hurley Avenue, Kingston; and Sunday, April 29, at 3:00 p.m. at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Holly Hills Drive, West Hurley.]
The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, formed in 1980 by musicians from the Woodstock area, now comprises professional musicians from the entire Hudson Valley. WCO regularly commissions music by local and regional composers and each season performs in Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, and at Bard College.
