WOODSTOCK CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CONCLUDES ITS 2006–07 SEASON AT BARD COLLEGE WITH AN ALL-BEETHOVEN CONCERT ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra concludes its 2006–07 Bard season with an all-Beethoven program, performing the “Coriolan” Overture, Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major (“Emperor”), and Symphony No. 7 in A Major. Nathan Madsen, the Bard College Orchestra’s music director, is the guest conductor, and the WCO’s artistic director, David Leighton, is piano soloist. The performance begins at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, in Olin Hall. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, and free for the Bard community with identification. [This program is repeated on Saturday, April 28, at 8:00 p.m. at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center, 243 Hurley Avenue, Kingston; and on Sunday, April 29, at 3:00 p.m., at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Holly Hills Drive (off Route 375), West Hurley.] Nathan Madsen, recently appointed music director of the Bard College Orchestra, was chosen at the age of 16 to conduct the Boy’s State Chorus in his native Utah. He received a master of fine art’s degree from The Conductors Institute at Bard, and has conducted the Da Capo Players and the Bard Musical Theatre Group. He is currently in his third season as staff conductor with the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra. Madsen champions new music through his appearances at the Conductors Institute’s Composer-Conductor Week, and collaborated last November with the Scottish conceptual artist Martin Creed in a British commission for the dedication of the Hessel Museum of Art. David Leighton, artistic director of the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, also widely performs in the Hudson Valley in chamber music concerts and solo piano recitals. Leighton has been recital accompanist for Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Scotto, and Marilyn Horne, and has conducted the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; Dallas Opera; Nashville Opera; Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, Germany; Chatelet Theatre, Paris; and IRCAM (Pierre Boulez, director). As artistic director for the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany, he gave piano recitals and conducted performances featuring 20th-century masterpieces. The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, formed in 1980 by musicians from the Woodstock area, now is composed of professional musicians from the entire Hudson Valley. WCO regularly commissions music by local and regional composers and each season performs in Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, and at Bard College. This concert is presented in cooperation with The Bard Center. For tickets, call 845-246-7045 or visit www.wco-online.com. # # # (04.16.2007)
