ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities in Kingston has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation. In its sixth year at the Kingston Library, the Clemente Course offers a free college-level introduction to the humanities—philosophy, literature, United States history, art history, critical thinking and writing—to Ulster County residents living on low incomes. The Ulster Savings Bank grant will support student expenses such as books and childcare. Students who successfully complete the yearlong course can earn six transferable Bard College credits.

“Bard College gratefully acknowledges and thanks the Ulster Savings Bank for its generosity and belief in the power of education to change lives,” said Marina van Zuylen, academic director of the Clemente Course and professor of French and comparative literature at Bard, stressing how vital support from business leaders and others in the community is to the success of the program.

“Since 2010, Kingston’s Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities has empowered area residents by helping build critical reading and thinking skills, which have had a substantial intellectual and psychological impact on participants, including motivation towards pursuing a college education and ultimately finding better employment,” said John Finch, Ulster Savings Bank EVP/Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of the Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation.  “The Charitable Foundation is pleased to again support Bard College with their Clemente Course and look forward to hearing even more positive, transformational stories involving Kingston-area residents.”
