CHENG LI, WIDELY RESPECTED EXPERT ON CHINA, TO DISCUSS CHINESE ART AND POLITICS AT BARD COLLEGE ON APRIL 11 Author and Hamilton College Professor Has Briefed Government Leaders and Appeared on CNN, C-SPAN, the BBC, and The News Hour with Jim Lehrer

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Cheng Li, an expert on Chinese government and politics and a professor of government at Hamilton College, will speak at Bard College on Thursday, April 11, as part of the Bard in China program. His talk, "Avant-Garde Artists in Shanghai: Transcending Old Boundaries and Seeking New Identities," is free and open to the public and will take place at 4:30 p.m. in Room 115 of the Olin Language Center.

A widely respected expert on China, Li has appeared on CNN, C-SPAN, the BBC, and The News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS. Through the State Department he has also helped to brief both James Sasser, former U.S. ambassador to China, and Admiral Joseph Prueher, current ambassador to China. He has also briefed congressional staff and given lectures to the National Press Club and the Woodrow Wilson Center.

Li is a member of the Institute of Current World Affairs in Hanover, New Hampshire. He is the author of China's Leaders: The New Generation and Rediscovering China: Dynamics and Dilemmas of Reform. His writings have appeared in World Politics, Asian Survey, The China Quarterly, The China Journal, and other publications. Li is currently working on two books: Chinese Technocrats: Their Social Origins, Ideological Attributes, and Political Behavior and National Identity and Urban Subcultures in China.
