BARD COLLEGE OFFERS A FREE COLLEGE COURSE IN THE HUMANITIES IN POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—In partnership with Family Services, Inc., the Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities will offer college level classes at the Family Partnership Center in Poughkeepsie for individuals between the ages of 17-40 who meet low income guidelines. Tuition, books, child-care, and transportation are provided at no cost to students. Course participants study the great ideas and masterpieces of literature and poetry; philosophy; painting, sculpture, and architecture; and American history, while receiving instruction in writing. Students who successfully complete the course earn six college credits. Many graduates have gone on to pursue degrees at two- and four-year colleges.
The goal of the Clemente Course, a national program now entering its fifth year of operation, is to bring higher education to low income residents of inner city and other poor communities. Many graduates of the course have gone on to pursue degrees at two- and four-year colleges.
