Parents Network
The Parents Network is committed to helping students succeed at Bard and
after graduation. Network members meet at Bard at least once a year, and
membership is open to all parents. Through the Network, parents of current
and former students give their time and resources to projects such as
mentoring programs, career counseling, professional introductions, calling
parents of prospective students, and fundraising on behalf of the College.
We welcome your ideas and your involvement.
Supporting Career Development
Career counseling helps young people discover what they want to do and
how they can best move toward their career goals. The Bard Office of
Career Development assists students with resumé writing,
interviewing techniques, on-campus and other employment, and internships.
It provides students with information on parent mentors,
many of whom volunteer through the Parents Network. Students use
this resource regularly, and there is a constant demand for more
mentors. Mentors answer questions about specific industries and
positions and often refer the students to industry professionals to
clarify their career choices.
Parents can also provide internship opportunities for students. Internship positions in all fields are welcome. Bard's 4-1-4 academic calendar allows students to gain internship experience during the month long January intersession. January internships are over four weeks; summer internships are eight to ten weeks. Parents can also provide accommodations for interning students. Hosting a student for a few weeks is a great way to participate in the Bard community.
Assisting Admissions
Throughout the year parents have many opportunities to meet other Bard parents. Your participation is invaluable in staffing "college nights" in your area, hosting receptions for prospective students, or calling the parents of incoming students to answer their questions about life at Bard. For example, each Spring Bard parents call parents of accepted students considering enrollment at the College. This program is especially effective in building a strong network of Bard parents nationwide.
Supporting The Parents' Fund
The Parents' Fund is a vital component of Bard's financial life, providing scholarship dollars and access to the latest books, technology, and online resources. The Fund also sustains the student clubs and activities that are so important to a rich campus life. Tuition and fees paid by students cover only about 60% of the cost of a Bard education. In addition to covering some costs for every student, the College provides more than $11 million in annual scholarships to deserving students needing financial support. Each year Bard raises money from parents like you to help meet operating costs. Your participation in the College's fundraising effort is greatly appreciated.
