Biography:
Carol Wax is an artist, printmaker, author, inventor, and teacher. Her imagery is inspired by commonplace objects she perceives as sentient or mystical. She works in several mediums, including drawing, pastel, painting, and mezzotint engraving, for which she is best known. The New York Times wrote that Wax had “found the perfect method for achieving her glowing, intense imagery. The velvety blacks and wide range of intermediate grays enable a subtle progression from dark to light, enhancing the volume of forms and giving them an extraordinary illusion of presence.” Her prints are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Boston Public Libraries, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Brooklyn Museum, Rhode Island School of Design Museum, and National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Wax, who invented a system for attaching adjustable weights to mezzotint rockers, which facilitates the grounding process, has received support from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, Change Inc., and New York Foundation for the Arts. Honors also include the Louise Nevelson Award for Excellence in Printmaking from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and residencies at the MacDowell Colony and Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation’s Space Program. Publications include the books Carol Wax: Catalogue Raisonné, Prints 1975–2005, in association with the Herakleidon Museum in Athens (2006), and The Mezzotint: History and Technique (Harry N. Abrams; Thames and Hudson, Ltd., UK, 1990), as well as numerous essays and reviews. She previously taught at Montclair State University, SUNY New Paltz, Rhode Island School of Design, and New York University’s School of Continuing Education, in conjunction with the Museum of the City of New York.BM, Manhattan School of Music; also studied at Lake Placid School of Art and Pratt Graphics Center. At Bard: Fall 2019.
