Biography:
Professor Stephano's areas of expertise include feminist philosophy, Spinoza, environmental ethics, Continental philosophy, and gender and sexuality studies. Publications include “Spinoza, Ecology, and Immanent Ethics: Beside Moral Considerability” forthcoming in Environmental Philosophy; and “Strange Intimacies,” Assuming Gender. Recent presentations include “Spinozist Ethics and 'Water is Life,'” “Irigaray, Bergson, and the Qualitative Becoming of Sexual Difference,” and “Affect, Ethics, and Ecology.” He previously taught at institutions including Stony Brook and Fordham University on subjects such as environmental philosophy, moral reasoning, feminist theory, and political philosophy. Professor Stephano is currently at work on a book developing an immanent ecological ethics drawn from Spinoza, based on how bodies affect one another’s capacities and ability to persist.BA, Vassar College; MA, The New School; PhD, SUNY Stony Brook.
