Biography:
Brooke Berman, a graduate of The Juilliard School, is an award-winning playwright, filmmaker, and memoirist whose work has been produced across the United States. Her plays include A Model City (workshopped as 1300 Lafayette East), Dearly Beloved, A Perfect Couple, Hunting and Gathering (named one of the 10 Best of 2008 by New York), and The Triple Happiness (Second Stage). Her 2010 memoir, No Place Like Home: A Memoir in 39 Apartments, was included as a top summer read by Elle.com and LA Magazine. Her first short film, Uggs for Gaza, won an audience special recognition award at the Aspen International Shortsfest. Other films she has written or adapted include All Saints Day, which screened at the Savannah and Tribeca Film Festivals; and Smashing, originally optioned and developed by Natalie Portman. She is also the author of 9 Juicy Weeks to a Wonderfully Imperfect First Draft (2014); her essays have appeared on Medium.com, Huffington Post.com, and Backstage.com, among others. She is the recipient of the Berilla Kerr Award, Helen Merrill Award, two Francesca Primus Prizes, and a commissioning grant from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture. She completed a seven-year residency at New Dramatists, where she served on the board of directors, and received support from the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. She previously taught as a guest artist in the New York City public school system; at colleges including Eugene Lang, Fordham, and Barnard; and through a teaching collective she co-created at New Dramatists.
