Liz Bowen
Visiting Assistant Professor of the Humanities
Biography:
Professor Bowen comes to Bard after serving as the Rice Family Postdoctoral Fellow in Bioethics and the Humanities at The Hastings Center, an independent research institute that addresses social and ethical issues in health care, science, and technology. She received her PhD in English and comparative literature at Columbia University, where she also received a certificate in feminist scholarship. Published work includes “Whose Underlying Conditions Count in Getting Priority for the Vaccine?” in Scientific American; “Learning to Read Ecologically: Disability, Animality, and Metaphor in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy,” in ELH; and “On Outcast Women, Dog Love, and Abjection between Species,” in the edited collection Animaladies: Gender, Animals, and Madness. She is also the author of academic reviews and interviews, and her creative work has been published in poetry collections, most recently Compassion Fountain (Trembling Pillow Press); periodicals; and anthologies. She has been a finalist or semifinalist for several poetry prizes, including the Black Warrior Review Poetry Contest, Rita Dove Poetry Prize, and Hyacinth Girl Press Chapbook Prize, among others.
