Biography:
Patricia Kaishian’s areas of research and special interest include the taxonomy of macro- and microfungi; development of long-term/longitudinal fungal research programs for conservation, biodiversity monitoring, and taxonomic discovery; development of fungal biodiversity and environmental health indicators using Laboulbeniales fungi; Armenian mycological diversity and ecology; developing a systematic approach to the collections at the American Museum of Natural History; and interdisciplinary studies focused on the philosophy of science, feminist bioscience, and science communication. A certified naturalist by the Cornell Cooperative Extension, she received her PhD in forest pathology and mycology at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. As a postdoctoral research assistant at Purdue University, she served as curator of the Arthur Fungarium and Kriebel Herbarium. Other research experience includes an expedition to the Ecuadorian Andes, through a National Geographic Explorer grant, to conduct a multi-kingdom biodiversity inventory of a rainforest threatened by an international mining company; and a Project Amazonas expedition in Peru, where she surveyed macrofungi in the forest surrounding the Madre Selva Biological Station and collected ethnographic information regarding the culinary, medicinal, and spiritual uses of fungi in the local communities. Her work has been published in Mycology and Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience.BA, Wheaton College; PhD, mycology, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. At Bard since 2021 .
