Description: The High Country Conservation Advocates Executive Director provides leadership and vision and is fully committed to the mission of the organization. She or he is responsible for the implementation of policies set by the Board of Directors as well as for attaining annual fundraising goals and other objectives via supervision and management of staff and programs. The Board of Directors provides guidance, direction and assistance to a dynamic team. Essential responsibilities include strategic planning and implementation of fundraising and policy objectives, and day-to-day administration of staff, finances, programs and communications.

Responsibilities:

Fundraising

  • Develop strategic short-term and long-term fundraising goals aimed at growing the capacity and stability of the organization.
  • Develop grant opportunities, liaise with granting entities, write and submit grant proposals, and assure compliance with terms and conditions of grants.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for donation-based fundraising.
  • With assistance from the Board, identify, cultivate and make requests of individual donors.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the Board’s efforts in obtaining donations, and follow up with potential and established donors.

Communications

  • Provide a positive “public face” for the organization in order to bolster appreciation for the organization’s programs and promote HCCA’s mission.
  • Serve as a primary contact to provide information and answer questions from the public, partner organizations and the media.
  • Oversee the design and production of HCCA print and digital materials and media.
  • Oversee development of HCCA educational and promotional programs.

Board relations and management

  • Provide timely information and monthly updates for the Board of Directors.
  • Provide support for board activities, including meeting schedules, agendas and materials.
  • Brief board members on HCCA policies and procedures, membership management, programs, and issues requiring board direction or action.

Administration

Staff

  • Analyze the organization’s functions and develop an organizational structure to efficiently and cost-effectively carry out those functions, including defining duties of staff positions.
  • Manage personnel, including hiring, training, mentoring, supervising, assignment of duties, and evaluation.

Operations

  • Develop, document, update, and implement operational and financial policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that HCCA complies with federal regulations so as to maintain the organization’s 501(c)(3) tax status.
  • Negotiate and administer contracts and assure compliance with contract provisions.

Finance – The Executive Director will work with the Finance Director to:

  • Manage the finances of the organization including development and implementation of the annual budget.
  • Manage and supervise the finances of all program areas including fundraising, program expenditures, and financial reporting.
  • Oversee the accuracy and timeliness of accounting, billing, and expenditures as required for the organization’s financial health.

Strategic Planning and implementation

  • Working with Board members and Outreach Director, oversee implementation and evaluate community outreach, public education and informational programs and activities that reflect HCCA’s mission.
  • Define goals and evaluation criteria for programs; review and report results of programs and activities and make recommendations for future improvements.
  • Identify emerging issues and make recommendations to the Board of Directors.
  • Become fully familiar with program areas: Save Red Lady, Public Lands and Water.

Qualifications: The Executive Director will have demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience to successfully carry out her or his duties in each of the primary areas cited above. In addition, the Executive Director will have demonstrated:

  • Strong leadership, management, organizational and public speaking skills
  • Successful fundraising skills, including a strong background and proven record in donor development and grant writing
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, advanced degree preferred
  • At least 5 years non-profit management experience
  • Ability to work independently and within groups
  • Willingness to work variable hours, including, on occasion, evenings and weekends
  • Willingness to accept review, evaluation, and constructive criticism of her or his work
